WR-01

The WR‑01 chassis was designed to deliver optimal high‑speed off‑road performance thanks to its twin‑motor layout, long independent suspension on all four wheels, and coil‑spring dampers.

Today (2026) only four models belong to this family:

– Wild Dagger, model number 58231, released in 1999 and available on the market until 2005
– Twin Detonator, model number 58309, released in 2003 and available on the market until 2010
– Double Blaze, model number 58366, released in 2006 and available on the market until 2008
– Dualhunter, model number 58396, released in 2007 and available on the market until 2013

It is the first twin‑motor chassis after the Clod Buster, but the design philosophy is completely different. The Clod Buster chassis has its motors mounted on two separate gear‑island units connected to the central tub by the suspension arms (four on the front axle and four on the rear). The motors and gearbox are installed directly on the axles, and the suspension is not independent.
By contrast, the WR‑01 chassis has both motors installed in the central frame, and all four suspensions are independent. Its handling is significantly superior to that of the Clod Buster, even though the Clod Buster’s driving feel is unique and impossible to replicate.

The two 540 motors installed on the WR‑01 chassis deliver power separately: one drives the front axle wheels and the other drives the rear axle wheels. Both motors are mounted at the center of the chassis, and the gears transfer motion to the axles. This configuration ensures a very low center of gravity with weight concentrated in the middle, resulting in improved stability on rough terrain.

The WR‑01 and TL01B chassis share several parts:

– Suspension arms — sprue number 00005688, also referred to as the C‑parts for both chassis. Each kit of these two models includes two sprues (left image).
– Steering system — sprue number 50736, also referred to as the B‑parts for both chassis. Each kit of these two models includes one sprue (right image).

Apart from the differences in the bodies, these four models share all their components. With the second model, the Twin Detonator number 58309, Tamiya released an electronic speed controller designed to manage two Sport‑Tuned motors: the TEU‑103BK, item number 45037, suitable for all twin‑motor vehicles such as the WR‑01 and the Clod Buster. The TEU‑103BK has dimensions similar to the TEU‑101BK, allows disabling reverse, and lets you set the main acceleration and reverse/brake parameters. It must be used with a BEC‑equipped receiver.

In the first model, the Wild Dagger number 58231, the front and rear gearboxes must be assembled by the builder. The four steps shown below appear only in the manual of model 58231; for the other models, these four steps are included in the “maintenance” section. The gears are bevel‑gear type. The other models have the front and rear gearboxes pre‑assembled at the factory.
