Falcon

Falcon is named after the first model released for sale using this chassis:

– The Falcon, model number 58056 released for sale in 1986 and available on the market until 1991
– Bear Hawk, model number 58093 put on sale in 1991 and available on the market until 1995
– Stadium Blitzer, model number 58106 put up for sale in 1992 and available on the market until 2004
– Blitzer Beetle, model number 58122 put up for sale in 1993 and available on the market until 2004
– Stadium Thunder, model number 58181 put up for sale in 1996 and available on the market until 2004

This chassis represents Tamiya’s new calling card for enthusiasts approaching the world of radio-controlled off-road cars. It is the least expensive of the available models: it costs 15% less than the Ford F150 Black Foot model number 58058 on the market in the same years. The price difference between The Falcon from 1986 and Stadium Thunder from 2004 is 20%. Considering that almost 20 years have passed, Tamiya has made every effort to keep the price of its entry chassis to the world of radio-controlled models low.
At the same time, it has adapted the chassis to the bodies that have become fashionable from Buggys (Falcon and Bear Hawk) to cars (Blitzer Beetle) to vans (Studium Blitzer and Studium Thunder).

These models represent a very important novelty for Tamiya, there are several advertisements that Tamiya or the various importers around the world have published in trade magazines; in the image below is an example of an advertisement for The Falcon.

Starting from the front and moving towards the rear, the main features of this chassis are:

– large front bumper to absorb shocks,
– central tub frame to carry electronics and battery,
– independent four-wheel suspension,
– rear-wheel drive,
– cantilevered motor at the rear; it takes up a concept introduced in The FOX model number 58051 released in 1985, the year before The Falcon was released.

Tamiya has also continued its design philosophy with the Falcon chassis. In the course of its almost twenty years on the market, the chassis has undergone several evolutions. The main differences between the various models are:

– the body; in the image below starting from the left at the top going to the right at the bottom there are the bodies of The Falcon model number 58056, Bear Hawk model number 58093, Stadium Blitzer model number 58106, Blitzer Beetle model number 58122 and Stadium Thunder model number 58181. Being a chassis that represents the entry model to the world of radio-controlled cars, Tamiya tried to apply economies of scale as best as possible:
the body of the Blitzer Beetle is the same as that of the Monster Beetle model number 58060 (this article explains the differences between the Sand Scorcher body and the Monster Beetle-Blitzer Beetle body) and
the body of the Stadium Thunder is the same as that of Dyna Blaster model number 58123
Bear Hawk and Blitzer Beetle have styrene body, while the other models have Lexan body.

– The difference in body conformation results in a different attachment system of the body to the chassis. Images of the front attachment system highlighted in red for The Falcon, in blue for Bear Hawk, in grey for Stadium Blitzer, in orange for Blitzer Beetle and in yellow for Stadium Thunder.

– The Falcon, Bear Hawk and Blitzer Beetle have drivers that are different depending on the body
– wheels and rims vary in shape and colour
– Bear Hawk does not have the C.V.A. shock absorbers that are provided on The Falcon, Stadium Blitzer, Blitzer Beetle and Stadium Thunder
– The Falcon has the longitudinal arm suspension while Bear Hawk, Stadium Blitzer, Blitzer Beetle and Stadium Thunder have the overlapping double-arm suspension.

The axle has been changed three times, starting with the version available on The Falcon (pictured left), through the version available on Bear Hawk (pictured centre) to the final version available on Stadium Blitzer, Blitzer Beetle and Stadium Thunder (pictured right).

– The Falcon has a differential that is different from that of Bear Hawk, Stadium Blitzer, Blitzer Beetle and Stadium Thunder: on the left the differential of The Falcon and on the right that of Bear Hawk, Stadium Blitzer, Blitzer Beetle and Stadium Thunder. The rack and pinion ratio change: the number of pinion teeth are 18 for The Falcon, 15 for Beak Hawk and 13 for Stadium Blitzer, Blitzer Beetle and Stadium Thunder.

– The Falcon has a different gearbox than Bear Hawk, Stadium Blitzer, Blitzer Beetle and Stadium Thunder.
Furthermore, the gearbox installed on The Falcon is protected by a roll bar (left in the picture) which is missing in Beak Hawk, Stadium Blitzer, Blitzer Beetle and Stadium Thunder (right in the picture). To protect the gear shell Beak Hawk, Stadium Blitzer, Blitzer Beetle and Stadium Thunder have a plastic bottom plate.

– The Falcon has a different solution for the front suspension and its attachment system to the chassis (left in the picture The Falcon and right in the picture Beak Hawk, Stadium Blitzer, Blitzer Beetle and Stadium Thunder). The Falcon suffers from breakage after jumps with less than perfect landings, the system of Beak Hawk, Stadium Blitzer, Blitzer Beetle and Stadium Thunder solves this situation.

– there are two types of spindles for the steering system; one in common with The Falcon and Bear Hawk (left in picture), another in common with Stadium Blitzer, Blitzer Beetle and Stadium Thunder (right in picture)

– The Falcon houses the auxiliary battery pack that is not present in the rest of the family; on the left is The Falcon version and on the right the Bear Hawk Stadium Blitzer, Blitzer Beetle and Stadium Thunder versions.

Re-releases and special versions

In 1999, a special version was released that today (2024) has become a collector’s item:

– Blitzer Beetle Chrome Metallic Special, model number 58252 put on sale in 1999 and available on the market until 2000

From 2010 until today (2024) there are several re-releases:

– Stadium Blitzer 2010, model number 58482 put on sale in 2010 and available on the market until 2011,
– Blitzer Beetle 2011, model number 58502 put on sale in 2011 and available on the market until 2012,
– Stadium Thunder, model number 58524 put up for sale in 2012 and available on the market until 2013,
– Blitzer Beetle 2011, model number 57929 put on sale in 2022 and available on the market until 2023. This model is ready to run complete with remote control, battery, electronics and charger.
