GB-01T

The GB-01T chassis is an evolution of the GB-01 chassis; the GB-01 and GB-01T chassis differ in the four rims with the four tires, the front damper stay, the rear damper stay and the body mount towers, which increase from three on the GB-01 chassis to four on the GB-01T chassis.

There is a set that allows the conversion of a GB-01 chassis into a GB-01T chassis in the Wild Boar version: set 40527, defined as “GB-01 Racing Damper Stay.” There is no equivalent set that allows the installation of the Suzuki Jimny SJ30 body, which comes factory-equipped with the GB-01T chassis, onto a GB-01 chassis. In this case, it is necessary to install a 40527 by mounting four horizontal towers.

The following models are part of the GB-01T TamTech-Gear by Tamiya series:

– Wild Boar, model number 56704, released in 2006 and available on the market until 2007; 1/14 scale factory pre-assembled model, complete with electronics, battery and charger (the charger is mainly included for the U.S. market and a few other markets worldwide),
– Suzuki Jimny SJ30, model number 83428, released in 2012 and available exclusively on the Japanese market until 2013; 1/10 scale assembly model.

The two chassis differ in the body locking system; the position of the towers used to attach the chassis to the body changes. The towers on the Wild Boar model are vertical (see the mounts highlighted in red, with the front towers on the left and the rear towers on the right), whereas the towers on the Suzuki Jimny SJ30 model are horizontal (see the rear mounts highlighted in green). On the Suzuki Jimny, the two front towers exit the body at the height of the radiator grille and the two rear towers exit the body at the height of the tailgate.

The GB-01 and GB-01T chassis share 95% of their components, differing only in the body mounting system and the front and rear damper stays. Set 40527 allows for the installation of plastic damper stays on a GB-01 chassis, enabling better shock absorber travel. The same set also includes the parts needed to install a Wild Boar body on a converted GB-01 chassis. Model 83428 Suzuki Jimny SJ30 shares the body with model Suzuki Jimny SJ30 Wheelie number 58531 and the body has code 51405.
Set 51405 includes the Lexan body, the roll bar with two lights, a driver figure in Wild Willy 58035 style, rear spare wheel and decal sheet.

Technically, the GB-01T chassis has the following specifications, starting from the rear and moving toward the front:

– the first major difference from the GB-01 chassis is the two large-size front wheels with tread pattern (first row below) and the two large-size front wheels with lugs (second row). The wheels and rims can be ordered separately as spare parts as set number 40137 described as GB-01T Wild Boar front rims (also available as set number 54831), to be completed with set number 40139 described as GB-01T Wild Boar front tires (also available as set number 54830) and set number 40138 described as GB-01T Wild Boar rear rims (also available as set number 54833), to be completed with set number 40140 described as GB-01T rear tires (also available as set number 54832). These rims and tires are accessories shared with the T3-01 chassis and the entire GB-01x family.

– front plate that optimizes travel of the two shock absorbers for the suspension

All other technical features are shared with the GB-01 chassis:

– rear-wheel drive powered by a type 370 motor with a Teflon pinion (see the four pinions with 12, 14, 16 and 18 teeth supplied from the factory, highlighted in the image below on the left in the first row). Technical specifications of the RK370 motor at maximum efficiency: 10,600 rpm, torque 5.4 Nm and current draw 1.8 Amps. For improved performance, install accessory number 40537 described as “Tamtech-Gear Sports Tuned Motor SPT”
– factory pre-assembled ball differential (code 40106, highlighted in the image below on the right in the first row); Tamiya chose to provide the differential pre-assembled due to its compact size. With the release of the GB-01S chassis, Tamiya introduced a more durable planetary gear differential. This new differential is compatible with the GT-01 chassis (code SP-1685 or 51695, described as Tamtech Gear GB-01S Spare Gear, highlighted in the image below second row)

– transmission equipped with anti-jump clutch. The slipper clutch is mainly composed of two discs kept in contact by a spring loaded by a bolt. The slipper clutch has two functions that compensate for the lack of grip between the surface and the wheels.
The first function is to protect the mechanical components during jumps. While jumping, the model is not in contact with the ground and the drive wheels spin without ground resistance: the wheels tend to increase their rotational speed. During long jumps, the motor’s rotation speed is modulated by the driver to keep the model stable, controlling the landing angle. In both cases, when the model touches the ground, the wheel speed must match the actual speed of the model by suddenly changing the rotation speed. This puts stress on the transmission gears.

The second function is to protect the gears from premature wear when, during sudden acceleration, the motor increases its rotational speed faster than the wheels can respond. The same occurs in the case of sudden deceleration. The clutch prevents the model from losing traction and avoids subjecting the gears to unnecessary wear.
The clutch serves this dual role, ultimately preserving the mechanics within the gearbox, where the most stressed gear is the motor pinion.
To achieve optimal performance, it is necessary to adjust the slip by acting on the adjustment nut (indicated as “BA9” and highlighted in red in the image above on the left). Follow the instructions by compressing the spring until reaching a total length of 4.2 mm to find an initial working point for the slipper clutch. Place the model on a table or flat surface, turn on the electronics, hold the rear wheels with your hands and give a brief throttle. Two outcomes are possible: the model tends to move and the front end with the front wheels lifts off the surface (following the blue line shown in the image below), or a noise from the gearbox is heard indicating that the clutch has activated and the front end of the model does not lift from the surface. In the image, the hand holding the rear wheels and the expected movement of the front axle upon the throttle burst are shown (highlighted by the red arrow).

The best configuration is when the nose and front wheels lift slightly, losing contact with the surface; this serves only as a starting point. The optimal setup depends on the grip conditions of the track surface and requires adjustment accordingly.
The two worst configurations are the extremes of adjustment: the spring being too tight or too loose. In the first case, the gears are directly and firmly connected to the wheel axle and the clutch completely loses its function. In the second case, the spring is so loose that it transmits no movement to the wheels, preventing the model from moving at all. In the Tamiya world, the first slipper clutch called TTC (Tamiya Torque Control) was engineered for the Super Astute, which was released in 1991.
– driveshaft with full ball bearings to reduce wear and thus increase system efficiency and extend runtime
– central bathtub-type chassis that ensures low overall weight and lowers the model’s center of gravity. The chassis includes a battery compartment accessible from underneath (see image below, batteries highlighted in red). The bathtub chassis of the GB-01T, GB-02 and GB-01 family differs from that of the GT-01 chassis.

– four independent suspensions with four black mini coil-over dampers for Wild Boar and blue mini CVA blue for Suzuki Jimny SJ30; both versions are very long and thin, accurately replicating those used on 1/10 scale models. There are two alternatives available to improve performance by replacing the factory-installed spring dampers with set number 40529 described as “TamTech-Gear CVA Damper Set (4 Pcs.)” or the most high-performing solution: installing set number 40513 described as “GB-01 Aeration Oil Filled Damper (4 pcs)”
– most of the screws used in models equipped with the TamTech Gear GB-01T chassis have an M2.6 thread
– the remote control system is based on 27MHz AM technology and consists of the Expec SP TTU-03 transmitter (code 17254324 or 7254324) and the TRU-02 receiver (code 45036). The onboard electronics include the TSU-02 servo and the TEU-102 BK ESC (image taken from the packaging below). As of today (2025), these are no longer available on the market. Note that the TEU-102 BK does not have a “cut-off” function and therefore cannot be used with LiPo batteries. Since LiPo batteries must not be completely discharged, it is advisable to replace the electronic speed controller if one wishes to use next-generation batteries.
