F1

Since the early 1980s, Tamiya has been releasing various formula car models that are a faithful reproduction of the track racing world:

– Formula 1,
– Sport Prototypes with covered wheels and
– Endurance – covered-wheel endurance racing.

The commercial strategy is to introduce several models to the market that share the chassis and change the body; it is the same method that was successful with the 934, Countach and XR311 chassis released before the F1 series.
With this family there is something new: technically there is continuous technical research; the chassis, while remaining essentially the same, has evolved with small differences with each release of new bodies.

Reproduction of Formula 1 cars is always important to Tamiya, the models are used for the most important pages of the Guide Books and the catalogue: front cover and second-third-fourth cover.

List of early, closely related Formula 1 models released for sale in the late 1970s and early 1980s:

– 58010-LIGIER F1 MANTA SJ9, released to sales in 1978 and remained on sale until 1980,
– 58011-FERRARI 312T3, released to sales in 1979 and remained on sale until 1983,
58012-LIGIER F1 MANTA SJ9 COMPETITION SPECIAL, released to sales in 1979 and remained on sale until 1989. This model completely reproduced the body of 58010- LIGIER F1 MANTA SJ9. It changed the chassis, the wheels, the motor….,
– 58019-WIILLIAMS F1 FW07, released to sales in 1980 and remained on sale until 1984,
58020-J.P.S. LOTUS 79, released to sales in 1980 and remained on sale until 1984, and
58031-BRABHAM BT50 BMW TURBO,released to sales in 1982 and remained on sale until 1984

All of these models are equipped with two identical bodies from the factory:

– one body is made of Lexan (lighter) and
– one body is styrene (heavier, but richer in detail)

These models have evolved to such an extent that two types of chassis can be distinguished: F1 and F1 CS where CS stands for Competition Special.
Division of bodies according to chassis:

– LIGIER F1 MANTA SJ9, FERRARI 312T3 and LIGIER F1 MANTA SJ9 COMPETITION SPECIAL are equipped with the “F1” chassis and
– WIILLIAMS F1 FW07, J.P.S. LOTUS 79 and BRABHAM BT50 BMW TURBO are equipped with the “F1 CS” chassis known as the “F1 competition special”.

Also available for this family is a body that is only sold as an accessory: Lotus 79 Martini in English green. Accessory number SP-1109 and without its own chassis, the body is compatible with both the F1 chassis and the F1 CS chassis.

Evolution due to technological refinements or the logic of cost reduction in series production has led to differences that characterise the two macro-families F1 and F1 CS. See image, list of differences:

A and B – front wheel steering system:
LIGIER F1 MANTA SJ9, FERRARI 312T3 and LIGIER F1 MANTA SJ9 COMPETITION SPECIAL have the steering support system in die-cast metal with the suspension arms – steering system in black plastic material. Modification of steering system to add shock absorbers.

Available as an accessory is the FRP (Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic) chassis set number 50124 F-1 FRP CHASSIS that can replace the metal chassis of the F1 family.

The design of the metal frame is different from the FRP frame, which is why the wire rear bumper is wider for the FRP frame.
